About The Book

Following The Footsteps of the 87th

The discovery of a Civil War-era family diary sets a modern-day couple on a 2,500-mile journey through their ancestry-deepening their understanding and respect for the sacrifices made by thousands of young soldiers.

Following the Footsteps of the 87th traces the transformation of three Southern Illinois brothers from farmers to Union soldiers, following their path through training and into some of the war’s most historic battles. Their experiences are brought to life through excerpts from personal letters and a diary carried for over 18 months.

Though the Van Fossan brothers lived more than 150 years ago, their story echoes the enduring values of courage, sacrifice, and freedom. Descended from German immigrants and tied to earlier generations who fought in the Revolutionary War, their legacy reflects the

broader American story.

Ironclads and Innovations of the Civil War

The American Civil War was “great” only in its scale and impact, not in virtue. Four words best describe it: death, destruction, division, and discovery. More than 650,000 Americans died during the four-year conflict, and the war devastated both government and civilian infrastructure. Its legacy of division between North and South, along with struggles over race, citizenship, and equality, continues to shape the United States today. Yet amid the devastation, the war also accelerated discovery and innovation. Both sides pushed the limits of technology and industry to meet the demands of war. Many inventions developed or refined during this time later transformed civilian life and contributed to the growth of the reunited nation.

This book explores those innovations—particularly in naval vessels, weaponry, medical advancements, and industrial development. Rather than focusing on detailed battle narratives, it highlights the key inventions that influenced the Civil War and helped shape the modern world.
